Burnley boss Vincent Kompany says his side’s 1-1 draw against Stoke City at Turf Moor left “a bitter taste”.

Harry Clarke headed home three minuets from time, cancelling out Connor Roberts’ opener early in the second half.

Jay Rodriguez had earlier hit the bar with a swerving strike from distance, while Josh Cullen was also denied by a smart stop by Josef Bursik.

The Clarets have now surrendered a lead in four of their last five matches, and Kompany admits it is tough to take.

But the Burnley chief remains focused on the bigger picture and believes his side are not too far away.

“No matter how long you have been in the game it is not something you get used to, especially when there was a good tempo to our play,” he said.

“On all fronts we played a good game. We didn’t concede chances and we created chances. Football is made of moments and that one crucial moment, it is not like you could see it coming.

“There was a restart and a couple of minutes on the side with one of their players being down and it went boom, boom and you are left again with a bitter taste.

“But at some point this type of performance will click and will lead to a run of wins. We are in and amongst it, five points off the top.

“Today is bitter but the challenge in this league is to stay focused and calm. It will hurt tonight but tomorrow we go again.”

Burnley drop to fifth in the Championship table – five points behind leaders Sheffield United after 12 games.

The Clarets are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they make the trip to Coventry, who currently sit at the foot of the table on seven points.
