Vincent Kompany is hopeful that Burnley’s squad depth will pay off heading into a busy month of fixtures.

The Clarets have eight games pencilled in for October, starting with a trip to Cardiff City at the weekend.

Kompany is prepared to make changes when necessary and is more concerned about performance levels than keeping everyone happy.

The Manchester City legend believes current players are more on board with squad rotation compared to previous generations.

“The players are educated on this,” said the Burnley chief. “If you look at any senior pro – my generation and maybe even previous – they would have gone, ‘well I prefer if he makes a choice’ and ‘choose one, pick one’.

“Then there is only one happy. I have gone through that phase where football was changing, where managers came in and I am talking 10 years ago, they started doing this.

“It is about keeping your legs fresh, and the intensity of the game that we play at - it is just not feasible to put it in the legs and in the hearts of one player. It is impossible.

“Some players are more robust and they can withstand it, but other players need some time to be able to rely on somebody else.

“When the big games come, you play the players you think will win you the games. But to get there and to be in that position, you need the whole squad.

“It is not about keeping players happy. It really is about keeping performances high.”

The Burnley fanbase has got behind Kompany and the team he has assembled at Turf Moor since day one, and the boss is grateful for their support.

But he isn’t surprised this is the case given the strong work ethic his players have displayed during the early weeks of the campaign.

He added: “Day one for me was the Huddersfield game. I think since then, I have really enjoyed the communion there has been between not just me, but the team and the fans.

“I could be seeing it completely wrong but all I have seen is full stadia everywhere, packed away ends and a team that has been together with the fans, whether we have played well or whether we didn’t.

“I have said it since day one, they can see how hard this team is working and running. When you see how hard this team works, it is our starting point in everything we do.”

Cardiff are currently 18th in the Championship table, just a point above the drop zone, after taking 11 points from their opening 10 games.

The Bluebirds are still searching for a permanent replacement for Steve Morison, who was sacked following a 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield earlier this month.

Caretaker boss Mark Hudson will be in the dugout against the Clarets at the weekend.
