PLEASINGTON golf ace Michael Hunt landed his second career Champion of Champions title - dedicating his triumph to his late mother Angela.

The 29-year-old Lancashire county player overcame frosty conditions at The Belfry to win the Glenmuir Champion of Champions Scratch Final by four shots.

It was the second time Hunt - the Northern champion - had secured the title, following his exploits in Wales back in 2002.

On this occasion, he admits he was inspired to victory by his mother Angela, who passed away in February aged 65.

"Throughout my career, my mum always supported me and wanted me to do my best," said Hunt.

"She hadn't been well for a while but, a couple of days before she passed away, she told me to win at the Belfry.

"On the morning of the event, I thought about that and I was a bit emotional.

"But it inspired me to go out there and win."

Hunt - winner of ELGA's Harold Ryden Trophy in 2001 - admits his parents played a significant role during his junior years as he competed on golf's Prospects Tour almost a decade ago.

He added: "I had to play at quite a few far-flung places in Britain, but I couldn't drive at the time.

"She drove me all over the place. My dad did quite a bit too, but he worked most of the time.

"My mum enjoyed caddying for me, although she never played. She was a popular person and well known to a lot of people in the area. The church was packed out at her funeral."

After a difficult 2007 season, Hunt is re-focused for the campaign ahead, determined to win back his Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit crown.

The Pleasington member is twice a merit winner - in 2004 and 2006 - but he entered fewer events last year as his crown went to Clitheroe's Mark Young.

"I'm not sure how many events I'll take part in this year, but I suspect I will give it more of a go," added Hunt.

"Having won it twice before, I know how special the Order of Merit is."
