BURNLEY manager Owen Coyle has spoken of his disappointment at no longer being able to play in the reserves' side this season.
The Clarets boss featured in two games, against Blackpool and Tranmere, scoring twice in a 7-1 win at Prenton Park.
But, after being named as a trialist in both matches, Football Association red tape has ruled that is his limit because international clearance was not sought when he left St Johnstone to take over as manager in November.
"I didn't think it would be a big deal but the FA have said (playing in the future) is subject to international clearance," Coyle explained.
"I was allowed to play two games as a trialist but my international clearance is up in Scotland because they never requested it before the transfer window closed.
"I wanted to play just to help the kids because when you're actually on the pitch with them, you can hopefully talk and guide them through it. As it is, unfortunately I can't."
It is possible that Burnley could request international clearance once the transfer window re-opens on July 1 but Coyle added: "I think another year on it might be too much but we'll wait and see what happens."
