Former Burnley defender Erik Pieters is training with Championship rivals West Brom, according to several reports.

The 34-year-old left the Clarets at the end of his contract over the summer and is currently searching for a new club.

Pieters made the move to Turf Moor from Stoke City in the summer of 2019 and went on to make more than 60 appearances during a three-year spell in the North West, scoring twice.

He also had spells with Utrecht and PSV Eindhoven prior to his time in England and has been capped 14 times by the Netherlands.

Vincent Kompany’s men were held to a 1-1 draw against West Brom on Friday night in front of the TV cameras.

Brandon Thomas-Asante scored a stoppage-time equaliser after the Clarets had earlier gone in front through Jay Rodriguez’s spot kick.

The Baggies are currently 16th in the Championship table, having won just one of their opening eight fixtures since the start of the new campaign.

The club failed to get a couple of deals over the line on deadline day, and manager Steve Bruce has revealed they will be looking at the free agent market in a bid to bolster their ranks.

He told Birmingham Live: "We will scour that. I'm sure everybody else will be scouring the same thing.

"We will be looking, see what is out there. There hasn't been a lot of money spent in this division, certainly not even in the last few days because of the situation everybody finds themselves in."

Friday night’s result leaves Burnley fifth in the Championship table – four points behind leaders Sheffield United.

Kompany’s men are back in action on Friday, September 9 when they welcome Norwich City to Turf Moor.
