Jon Dahl Tomasson was delighted to send the travelling Rovers contingent away happy after Ben Brereton scored his third of the season to hand them a 1-0 win at Blackpool.

Brereton scored when played through by Bradley Dack to put Rovers ahead in the 16th minute, a lead they would have added to in the second half were it not for some excellent goalkeeping from Dan Grimshaw.

And pleased to get back to winning ways after a run of three straight defeats without scoring, Tomasson said: “It was a great result, those games, derbies, can be difficult when playing away.

“We brought 3,500 supporters, I think they enjoyed it. They were helping us and it was a deserved victory.

“Coming here to Blackpool, it’s not an easy place to come, and we played an intense game with and without the ball.

“We were good, played with few touches, created opportunities, should probably have scored more goals. Had a lot of shots on target, off target, and I think we looked dangerous on the transition moments.

“In that way it was a great win. I enjoyed it, I think our fans enjoyed it, for sure.”

The goal was a moment of quality from Rovers who were clinical on the break to open up the Seasiders defence.

He said: “We spoke about that space behind the backline when were winning the ball, keep that in the team and then play few touches, play forward.

“We played a touch into Dack, two touches into Ben who ran in behind at the moment, great timing and a great goal.

“We had a couple (of chances), and when you’re an old striker you’re not happy when you’re not scoring goals.

“First of all the way we created the chances was brilliant, creating a lot of chances in an away game, in a derby game, is not easy so I will be positive in that way.

“It would be nice for me if we could have got the second goal.”

Dom Hyam came in for his Rovers debut as Tomasson made five changes from the side beaten by Stoke City at the weekend.

Daniel Ayala missed out with a calf problem, but the new signing was a commanding presence in the heart of the backline alongside Hayden Carter who came in for his first start of the season.

“First of all, great to have Dom in. A defender likes a clean sheet,” Tomasson said.

“As a coach you love a clean sheet.

“He trained with us yesterday so playing a game immediately, with Hayden who has been out for four weeks and Trav as a right back, is maybe not the best combination but those boys did a great job.

“When you play a lot of games you of course need to use the squad and we haven’t had the chance to use the squad.

“The squad is stretched and hopefully when the transfer window closes we have a bigger squad in that way.”

Brereton now has three goals in his seven Championship appearances, his first since netting in the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.

On the prospect of keeping him beyond the transfer deadline, he said: “Let’s wait and see, I hope so.

“Ben has great quality, works hard for the team.

“When I arrived here he didn’t work so hard without the ball but now he’s flying around with a smile on his face.

“Hopefully he can stay and if not then we need a lot of money.”
