Rovers could still land Sepp van den Berg before the transfer window closes next Thursday.

An agreement has been in place with Liverpool for van den Berg for a couple of weeks, but has been held up due to injuries within the Liverpool squad.

The Dutch defender has made the bench in each of Liverpool’s three Premier League matches so far, with Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate both sidelined by injury.

With van den Berg required as part of Liverpool’s 20-man matchday squad, he wasn’t released for the loan which put his potential move to Rovers in doubt.

Rovers had seemed willing to wait for the 20-year-old who was identified as a top target by Jon Dahl Tomasson who has watched his progress with the Netherlands Under-21s squad.

Van den Berg has experience of the Championship due to 61 appearances during his two previous loan spells at Preston North End and is seen as a versatile option that would add depth and competition to Rovers’ backline.

With a deal for Coventry City defender Dom Hyam progressing, with Rovers having had a bid accepted for the 26-year-old, that threw the van den Berg deal into even more doubt, not least with the emergence of interest in Steven Caulker who became a free agent earlier this week when leaving Fenerbahçe.

Yet given the fact that Nat Phillips was back in the Liverpool squad after a one-match absence, there is a growing feeling that van den Berg will now be freed up to move out on loan before Thursday’s 11pm deadline, with Rovers poised.

They are looking to add two defenders to their ranks before then, though should they move for 30-year-old Caulker, that wouldn’t need to be before the deadline due to being a free agent.

Rovers are also in the market for a forward, with the prospect of that being another loan deal, but with the likelihood of an option to buy being included.

That comes amid the uncertainty of Ben Brereton’s future, though a move for one forward will come irrespective of what happens to the Chile international, and should he move on before the deadline, Rovers would likely look for an addition option to their forward line.

Rovers are thought to be keeping tabs on Chile international Bastian Yáñez.

The 21-year-old has two goals and five assists this season, with 16 goal contributions in 71 appearances for Union Espanola who are currently fourth in the Chilean top-flight.

He is under contract there until 2023 and would likely command a fee in the region of 2m Euros, though Yáñez is unlikely to receive a work permit at this stage, having only won two Chile caps to date.

He is the second Chilean that Rovers are thought to have looked at in this window, following reports earlier this month of interest Alexander Aravena.

The 19-year-old currently with CD Ñublense and has nine goals and two assists in 22 appearances this season.
