Rovers will be rejecting the opening bid from Ligue 1 side OGC Nice for Ben Brereton.

The club received a bid of 10m Euros on Tuesday night which falls well below Rovers’ valuation for the 23-year-old.

Rovers didn’t respond to the offer, with the club keen for the focus of Brereton, and head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, to be on Wednesday night’s game at Reading.

The club will now respond to Nice to reject the offer and await the French side’s next move.

The bid equates to around £8.4m, which was slightly more than Southampton’s first offer for Adam Armstrong, which again fell well below the club’s valuation.

In the end the two clubs agreed on a deal worth an initial £15m, rising to £20m with add-ons.

That is the very least Rovers will want to agree to the sale of Brereton who scored 22 goals last season, and is already up and running with two in this campaign.

Brereton is into the final year of his contract, which weakens Rovers’ hand, and also heightened interest in the Chile international.

Director of football Gregg Broughton is expected to meet with Tomasson today to discuss Rovers’ transfer plans, with Brereton on the agenda.

Speaking after the defeat at Reading, Tomasson said of Brereton: “I think there’s always speculation regarding Ben.

“I have only been here for a few weeks and there’s always talk about Ben.

“He’s a good boy and he’s a quality player.

“If there’s a bid it’s about the amount of the bid.”

While Tomasson stated: ‘he would probably cost £30m in my head’, when asked to clarify whether that was a club stance, he added: “I just made that up.”

Nice finished fifth in the top-flight of French football last season and qualified for the Europa Conference League.

Their recruitment this summer has seen them move for goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and Aaron Ramsey, while they have also been linked with Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe.

Owners Venky’s have stood firm during previous interest in Rovers players, not least the January transfer window when they continued to turn down bids for Joe Rothwell, as well as declaring Brereton not for sale.

The transfer window remains open until September 1, but from January Brereton could agree pre-contract terms with an overseas club to kick in when his Rovers deal expires next summer.

His value would therefore decrease should he still be with Rovers beyond the transfer window, but the prospect of that hasn’t been ruled out by the club.

Everton are a new name in the frame for Brereton given their search for a new attacker.

While their interest is genuine, it appears that Frank Lampard would prefer a more proven Premier League option, with Chelsea’s Armando Broja and Brighton’s Neal Maupay among the alternatives.

Fulham and Bournemouth have also been credited with interest.

Meanwhile, Rovers will hold further contract talks with the representatives of 17-year-old defender Ash Phillips.

Interest remains from Tottenham Hotspur, although there is no agreement in place with the Premier League club, despite reports to the contrary.

While Phillips has indicated that he would like to stay with Rovers, there is still no agreement over a new contract.

Further talks are planned in the coming days, but have been ongoing for some time.

Phillips is into the second year of his scholarship at the club, signed last summer and in place until 2023.

An agreed professional deal was due to be signed on July 1, with Phillips previously unable to sign professional terms until he was 17, but that went unsigned.

Dialogue has continued between the two parties since, though no agreement is in place for the England youth international.
