Jon Dahl Tomasson says ‘money will decide’ the future of Ben Brereton as he put in another standout display as Rovers maintained their 100 per cent record.

Brereton scored a fine first and set up the second for Sam Gallagher as Rovers held out after a late West Bromwich Albion fightback.

A deflected Grady Diangana strike was the first that Rovers have conceded in their four games, but a patched up defence held out to make it three wins from three in the league.

Brereton lit up the game with an excellent first, before his run down the left helped set up an equally well-taken Gallagher goal.

That will only see speculation over his future intensity, with still two weeks of the transfer window left to run.

Head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson said: “Ben is a great player, he showed that today.

“On the ball, incredible scoring ability, but off the ball he’s working very hard for the team and he’s doing that with a smile on his face.

“He’s doing a tremendous job.

“At the end of the day, money will decide what happens.”

Rovers lost Scott Wharton to injury before the game, with the defender struggling with a calf problem which will rule him out of at least the next two games.

Teenager Ash Phillips was forced off with cramp on his league debut in the second half, with Callum Brittain also withdrawn at half time.

Brittain is expected to be back for Wednesday night’s trip to Reading, but Wharton joins Sam Barnes and Hayden Carter on the sidelines.

It leaves Rovers stretched in defence, with a deal for Liverpool youngster Sepp van den Berg being held up due to fitness issues within the Reds squad.

Asked if any new recruits were imminent, Tomasson said: “In football nothing is sure until they are stood next to you.”

Sam Szmodics made his home debut against West Brom, with Tyler Morton coming off the bench at half time.

Tomasson will look for a busy end to the window, with players coming in, but also potentially out should the opportunities for game-time in the EFL arise.

“It’s not a surprise for anyone,” he said.

“Eight players left, we’ve brought in three so we need to bring more in.

“The Championship is an extremely tough league, they’re coming really fast, so you need to be clever in that way and bring players in.

“When we have players in there could be a couple leave.”

Rovers made it three wins from three by holding out against the Baggies, much to the delight of Tomasson.

He said: “Extremely pleased, especially when you’re starting a new project which this is as I’ve said from day one.

“We are ambitious but we are thinking with patience.

“We don’t have the money that the rest of the clubs so we need to do things differently and slowly build and build.

“We have a lot of youngsters we need to develop those to create a better team but also to create value.

“At the end of the day we need to be a sustainable Premier League, but we need to get up there and stay there.

“So that’s a project but it’s great and I’m happy to celebrate another win with the fans.”
