Dilan Markanday is in need of ‘rhythm’ as he looks to get up to speed.

Markanday didn’t travel with the first-team squad to Swansea City having played for the Under-21s at Everton the previous night.

Tomasson confirmed that is a stance he will take throughout the season with players who are short of game-time.

For Markanday in particular he is looking to push his claims for first-team inclusion after a disappointing start to his Ewood Park career.

Injury on his debut at Hull City in January, having joined the club in the winter window from Tottenham Hotspur, kept the 20-year-old out until the final day of the season.

Markanday featured heavily in pre-season but is yet to feature in the opening two Championship fixtures, but could get his opportunity in the Carabao Cup.

“If they are not having enough minutes they will play for the Under-21s to get minutes,” Tomasson said.

“I look very much into loads and how many minutes players need to perform how I want for the physical part of it.

“Dilan got minutes. He got a lot of minutes in pre-season. He was injured when he first came at Hull City, that was very unlucky for the boy having come here from Tottenham after scoring all of those goals in the youth.

“He’s a player who needs more rhythm and he got that in the Everton game.”
