Russell Martin suggested there had been derogatory comments about his side’s style of play from the Rovers bench during the 3-0 victory.

Yet Rovers head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson said he had no complaints about the way Swansea played, the hosts having completed 655 passes to Rovers’ 234, and enjoyed 71 per cent possession.

However, of those 655 passes, more than half were made by the Swansea back three, with Rovers restricting striker Michael Obafemi to just 15 touches across the 90 minutes.

It has been the Swansea way of playing since Martin took over last summer, his first game being a defeat at Ewood Park last August.

There were frustrated cries, and then boos at the final whistle, from the home stands. But in his post-match press conference, Martin claimed comments had been made from the Rovers bench about his side’s style.

“The way we play isn't always going to please everyone. I think pretty much everyone out of Swansea hates it because they're desperate to stop it and beat it,” he said.

"Even a few comments from their bench towards it tells me the mentality towards it because we dare to try and control things and pass the ball. That's their prerogative.

“Ours is to try and control and improve people, bring the best version of ourselves.

"I really admire the lads sticking to it when it did get a little bit tetchy. I understand that.

"Expectancy has gone up from last season, we've had more time to work with the players. We need to stick together, work really hard and try to find solutions to the problems we faced.”

Asked whether those comments referenced the style of play, Martin continued: "Yeah, or an opinion of us as people which really doesn’t bother me because they don’t know me one bit, but it’s what you get when you play a certain way, a certain style of football here in the Championship.

“We have to make sure we are successful. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on football, right? If someone likes a different style of football to me, I don’t have an opinion on that, especially if I don’t know them.

“Everyone’s entitled to do what they want to do, but for some reason the way we do it really p***** people off.”

Goals from Sam Szmodics, Ben Brereton and Lewis Travis helped Rovers to a comfortable 3-0 win, with the visitors largely restricting the threat of Martin’s side.

Thomas Kaminski was relatively untroubled, though did make two saves in second half injury time from Harry Darling as Rovers held on for a second successive clean sheet.

Tomasson appeared surprised when asked about Martin’s comments, having referenced the Swans’ style of play throughout his answers about Rovers’ game-plan.

“Regarding the way they played?,” Tomasson responded.

"I think they played a good football game so I have nothing to complain about regarding that

“We played against a good side who are very strong on the ball so that's why I chose to control the game out of possession.

“The way the boys did that was excellent.”
