Tyler Morton had his eyes set on a loan move this season – and revealed Rovers’ blossoming relationship with Liverpool was key to him making the switch to Ewood Park.

Morton became the third Liverpool player in as many years to agree a season-long loan switch to Rovers following in the footsteps of Harvey Elliott and Leighton Clarkson.

The understanding between the two clubs has flourished, leaving Morton in no uncertain terms that a move to Rovers was the right one.

“I had my eyes set on my this move because it’s a top team and a top league,” he explained.

“I experienced a lot last season playing in different competitions but this is a completely different challenge.

“It’s massive for me, and that’s why I chose this club.

“They (Liverpool) know Blackburn is a top quality club and full of top quality players. They understood this was a good move for me.

“The gaffer’s way of playing it really suits me, I’m a high energetic player and I like to get on the ball and he really likes to play.

“It kind of fitted me perfectly and hopefully I can show that.”

While he has made nine first-team appearances for Liverpool already, including a Premier League start, the cut and thrust of regular Championship game-time is what he craves.

But he knows there are no guarantees of a place in the side.

“It’s not as easy as that, you have to earn your spot and I’m willing to do that,” the 19-year-old added.

“We have top quality midfielders who I’ll have to compete with and I’ll have to show what I’ve got and I can’t wait to showcase what I’ve got.

“I’ve got to earn a shirt, I know that, and it’ll be difficult to do that but that’s what I’m aiming to do.”

Elliott had a stand-out season for Rovers in 2020/21 and has since become a fixture in Liverpool’s first-team plans.

Clarkson endured a more difficult spell, featuring only nine times in the first half of the season before returning to Anfield in January.

But Morton said the pair only had good things to say about Rovers.

He added: “Luckily I’m very close to both of them so I spoke to them quite a lot.

“I was guessing I was coming here for a while so I had to get all the inside information and there was nothing but positivity from both of the lads.

“It made it easier speaking to them and getting to know the lads before I met them.

“He (Elliott) is a class player, a proper professional and one of my good mates. I hope he does well.

“You can see how Blackburn in the Championship helped him as a player and a person because he’s grown that way.

“I was watching his games and he was top quality and he’s adaptable in different formation which has helped him from playing here.”
