Former Burnley captain Ben Mee is reportedly closing in on a return to the Premier League with Brentford.

Mee spent 11 years at Turf Moor since joining from Manchester City in the summer of 2011, initially on a loan deal.

The 32-year-old played key roles in the Clarets’ promotions from the Championship in 2014 and 2016, as well as featuring in the Europa League qualifying rounds.

He also became part of the coaching set-up to assist interim boss Mike Jackson following Sean Dyche’s departure during the final stages of last season.

Mee was one of several players to leave the club at the end of his contract following relegation from the top-flight.

And he is now set to join the Bees as Thomas Frank looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the upcoming campaign, according to The Athletic.

Frank’s men finished 13th in their first season in the Premier League, comfortably beating the drop.

Speaking after his Turf Moor exit was confirmed, Mee said: “It’s a club and town that has grown a very special place in my heart throughout that time.

“I’d like to thank all the staff I have worked with throughout my time at the club who made Burnley home for me.

“There are so many fantastic people that work behind the scenes to make it all tick over and it was a pleasure to work with you and get to know you all.

“To my team-mates, who I’ve been lucky enough to share the dressing room with, thank you for making my time so enjoyable.

“There have been plenty of brilliant players but also many great characters that have become very good friends of mine.

“We have shared lots of incredible times on and off the pitch and it was a joy sharing those moments with you.”
