Burnley have completed the signing of young defender Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The 20-year-old is a Netherlands Under-21 international and spent time on loan at Coventry City last season, making 40 appearances for the Sky Blues.

He joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2018 and made his senior debut in a 7-2 win against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup a year later.

Maatsen can also play in a more advanced role on the left flank and reportedly had interest from other clubs in the UK and abroad.

“I’m excited to come here and play for Burnley. It’s a big club and a new challenge, which I’m ready for. I look forward to meeting new people and this season will be good for me,” he told the club’s website.

“Vincent Kompany is a Premier League legend. He knows what young players need to go through in their careers, so that’s why I chose to come here and work with him.

“He’s got a lot of experience in the football world. It can’t get much better than having him as a manager for me, I know it’s going to be good.

“It means a lot that he puts trust in young players like me and I think it will be interesting to have a young team with a lot of fire.”

The left-back becomes the Clarets’ seventh new addition since the appointment of Vincent Kompany as manager.

“We’re pleased to add Ian to our team,” added Kompany. “He’s a talented, energetic and pacy player, who can defend and get forward well.

“Ian will be a great addition to our team on and off the pitch.”
