Rovers haven’t had any contact from Serie A side Salernitana over the possibility of a summer transfer.

The Italian press claimed that advanced negotiations had taken place, with sporting director Morgan De Sanctis said to have travelled to London to push forward with a move.

It had been suggested that De Sanctis had met with the Rovers hierarchy to continue negotiations on Monday.

That comes as Lyon, Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt became the latest clubs to be linked with a move for Brereton, who is the subject of intense speculation.

However, Rovers have received no contact from the Italian side, with Brereton currently away with the first-team squad in Portugal.

Netting 22 times in 2021/22, his form on the international stage with Chile and also being in the last year of his contract have contributed to the speculation surrounding Brereton.

But as yet, Rovers haven’t accepted any bids for the 23-year-old who returned to pre-season training last Thursday.

Brereton was granted additional time off following his international commitments with Chile over the summer, but was part of the 28-man squad who travelled to Portugal on Sunday.

Director of football Gregg Broughton is with the squad, but will travel back in advance of them, as Rovers look to push forward their own transfer plans.

Broughton said those could be done irrespective of the future of Brereton, though it is understood any potential sale of the top scorer would ‘change the dynamics’ of Rovers’ dealings.

Brereton finished the 2021/22 campaign with 22 Championship goals for Rovers, reaching 20 before the turn of the year.

The attacker has now been with Rovers for four full seasons having joined from Nottingham Forest following promotion from League One for a fee in the region of £6m.

Forest will be due a small slice of the profit from any move due to a sell-on clause in the 2018 deal.

Due to the structure of the transfer window in the summer of 2018, it was an initial loan deal which was made permanent in the January window.

Brereton scored once in his first two seasons at the club, but started to feature more regularly in 2020 before kicking on in 2021/22 when he scored seven times.

He stepped up to the fill the void left by Adam Armstrong following his move to Southampton, Brereton reaching double figures by the October international break and then 20 before the end of the year.
