Rovers head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has been linked with a potential raid on former club Malmo.

Defender Anel Ahmedhodzic faces an uncertain future, with Rovers credited with interest in the 23-year-old Bosnia international.

Ahmedhodzic is back at Malmo after a loan spell with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux whose relegation, and financial issues, will see them pull out of paying the 4m Euro clause within that loan deal.

As a result, the defender has returned to Malmo but is keen for a new challenge, a situation Rovers could look to take advantage of.

The defender was a regular during both of Tomasson’s seasons in charge of Malmo in which they won back-to-back league titles.

The Swedish league returned to action, following a break for the international fixtures, last week though Ahmedhodzic wasn’t involved.

He did however feature in all four Nations League matches for his country, starting them all, taking him to 18 caps.

Malmo-born Ahmedhodzic was capped by Sweden throughout his youth, and also by the senior side, but switched allegiance in 2020 and has since played 18 times for Bosnia, scoring once.

Ahmedhodzic is also no stranger to English football, spending three years with Nottingham Forest between 2016 and 2019, in which he made one appearance in the Championship against Newcastle United.

He moved to hometown club Malmo in January 2019, and after spending time on loan at Hobro IK, was integrated into the Malmo first-team by Tomasson.

Countries across Europe, including Serie A side Atalanta, were reportedly showing interest in the defender, but his career is now at a crossroads.

Malmo coach Milos Milojevic revealed in an interview that Ahmedhodzic does not want to stay in Sweden, while he won’t be staying in France following Bordeaux’s relegation.

There is a hope that his future can be resolved sooner rather than later, with Milojevic telling the Swedish press: “I talked to him shortly before he went to the national team gathering, he told me that he needed some free time after the national team games and we will enable him to do that.

“His wish is to sell him and play outside, but I think he is smart and aware that if nothing happens in the transition period, it is better for him to play here than to wait for something that will not come.

“I don't know his situation very well, but we expect him to declare himself by June 30.”

With Gregg Broughton having worked with Bodo/Glimt in Norway, as well as Tomasson’s links to both Danish and Swedish football, there was an expectation that Rovers could look to the Scandinavian market.

Director of football Broughton played down those expectations, stating work permit issues had shrunk that particular market by around 80 per cent.

However, given his regular involvement for Bosnia at international level, and his previous spell in England, as well as his appearances in France, it would be expected that Ahmedhodzic could overcome any work permit issues.
