Joe Rothwell has confirmed his departure from Rovers after four years with the club.

The midfielder took to social media to confirm what has been expected for some time that his time with Rovers is at an end.

Rothwell didn’t feature in the matchday squad at Birmingham City where Rovers rounded off the season with a 2-1 win.

The 27-year-old leaves having made 161 appearances for the club since joining from Oxford United in 2018 when he became the club’s first signing after promotion from League One.

Rothwell starred for Rovers this season, making 41 appearances, his form leading to interest from Chicago Fire and Bournemouth in the January transfer window, with those bids turned down as the midfielder saw out the season at Ewood Park.

Bournemouth, promoted to the Premier League this season, remain interested in Rothwell who could now get his crack at the Premier League having made one appearance when coming through the ranks at Manchester United.

Writing on social media, Rothwell said: “And just like that my four years at Rovers has come to an end.

"I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a prestigious club and for bringing me into a group of lads that I don’t think will ever be matched. I wish you all nothing but success.

“And finally to the fans who have got right behind me from the day I walked through the door, I will be forever grateful.

“Best of luck to the club for the future.”
