DERBY boss Wayne Rooney is reportedly “top of the list” as Burnley continue their search for Sean Dyche’s successor.
Rooney has received praise for the job he has done since taking charge at Pride Park amid the club’s issues off the pitch.
However, the former Manchester United and England striker was unable to keep the Rams up this season following a 21-point deduction.
Chairman Alan Pace feels Rooney would be a suitable candidate for the job, according to a report by The Sun.
The 36-year-old is said to be “tempted” to join the Clarets even if they fail to beat the drop this season.
He has previously spoken about his desires to manage in the Premier League and was linked with a return to Everton before Frank Lampard took charge at Goodison Park back in January.
Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder and Slaven Bilic have also been linked with a move to Turf Moor recent weeks.
Interim boss Mike Jackson looks set to be in the dugout for Saturday’s trip to Watford – a crucial fixture in the relegation battle.
Jackson’s men are out of the bottom three following back-to-back home wins against Southampton and Wolves.
The Clarets are two points above 17th-placed Everton heading into Saturday’s game but the Toffees have a game in hand.
