Rovers manager Tony Mowbray puts his side’s injury-time heartbreak down to experience.

They have now lost four points to injury-time goals in their last eight matches – missing penalties in two of those games.

Sheffield United and Bristol City snatched 1-0 victories through 95th minute goals after Rovers had failed to convert from the spot with the score at 0-0. They were then denied all three points by a 99th minute Viktor Gyokeres goal against Coventry City last weekend.

Rovers have shipped 12 goals in the final 15 minutes of matches, also losing to a 78th minute strike at Reading, and have managed only eight in that time.

Earlier in the season, there were dropped points late on against Huddersfield Town (84th minute) and Luton Town (98th minute).

Reda Khadra and Sam Gallagher’s winning goals against QPR and Middlesbrough were in the 77th and 76th minutes respectively, but there is only one occasion this season where Rovers have won points from the 80th minute onwards.

That was Darragh Lenihan’s 86th minute winner at Nottingham Forest in August, with Rovers’ goals timed later than that both coming in 5-1 and 3-1 winning causes against Cardiff City and Derby County.

While 32 of Rovers’ 51 goals have come in the second half, with 16 consecutive first halves having now passed without a goal, they are most prolific soon after the re-start. No team in the division has a greater number of goals in the 15 minutes after the re-start as Rovers’ 15.

But it is those points dropping late on that Rovers could be left to rue as they dropped out of the top six for the first time since November.

Yet Mowbray says there is still plenty to play, stating: “Sometimes they need a voice to put things into perspective.”

He added: “Some of the performances where we haven’t scored away from home have been worthy of victories.

“Sheffield United away, a missed penalty, we would have won that game 1-0.

“And then to lose in the 95th minute, this is a young team who have to learn on the job.

“I don’t think a more experienced team loses goals in the 95th and 99th minutes, they see the game out, but we’re still learning.

“There’s so much still to play for, we have to keep believing, keep sticking together and see where we finish.”
