Ryan Giles can do damage from the right flank where he has started the last two games, according to Tony Mowbray.

Giles kept his place for the midweek visit of Millwall, having been recalled for the defeat at Fulham, on the right of the Rovers attack.

Despite being predominantly left-footed, Mowbray feels the Wolves loanee can make an impact on the right flank where he has started the last two matches.

Giles has now played five times since his deadline day move, and while feeling there is more to come, Mowbray says much of that comes down to the player demanding more of the ball.

“Playing him where we played him the other night, my perspective, and other people might have different views, but that’s the right position,” Mowbray said.

“You watch how tight he is on that left foot, how quick he is, what he needs to do, and I say to him every day, he finds to find a greater personality to instil that on the game.

“He has to demand the ball, get angry if someone looks at him but turns and goes somewhere else.

“He’s got fantastic talent, brilliant speed, amazing technique on his left foot, if he doesn’t get the ball he doesn’t seem to mind and he just carries on.

“I want him to get on the ball.

“He can run past you on the outside and if you overcommit he just chops it back onto his left foot and whack it in the top corner.”

Giles claimed nine assists during his time with Cardiff City in the first half of the season, many of those from set pieces, but he has struggled to have the same impact from dead-ball situations since his move to Rovers.

He has also played at left wing-back, as well as in the front three, and delivered 23 crosses on his debut at Swansea City.

There Mowbray said Rovers had to realise the threat of the 22-year-old and utilise him more, a similar process they have gone through with Joe Rothwell.

But Mowbray says that has to come from Giles himself, to get on the ball more in order to make an impact.

He added: “We’ve worked really hard with Joe Rothwell for a number of years, when you’re a really good player, you need to get on the ball.

“I would say to the team during the first three years of my tenure, just give it to Dack’.

“Why wouldn’t you give the ball to your best player because he never loses it, he can hit short passes, long passes.

“Ryan Giles is a really good player, but why isn’t he demanding the ball? Give him the ball and watch him dance inside like Riyad Mahrez.

“He can run past you on the outside and if you overcommit then he just chops it back onto his left foot and whacks it in the top corner.”
