Ben Brereton has sustained a twisted ankle and will miss at least this weekend’s visit of Millwall.

The Rovers top scorer limped out of the second half of Monday’s stalemate with West Bromwich Albion, and despite hopes that it was just a kick, Mowbray has revealed it is a twisted ankle sustained by the Chilean.

Mowbray hasn’t put a timescale on the absence of Brereton, other than to say he will be out for Saturday’s visit of Millwall.

He said: “He’s okay, in a good mood, joking around as he normally does.

“He has twisted his ankle, it wasn’t a kick, and he will miss a period of time.

“We will wait and see how long that will be.

“He won’t be available this weekend which is a blow but it’s an opportunity for someone else to come in and see if they can knock the goals in.

“Ben filled a void when Adam Armstrong left and if Ben is going to miss a game or two then someone else has to step up.”

Brereton missed Rovers’ win over Middlesbrough and the 0-0 draw with Luton Town last month due to his international commitments with Chile and was only named among the substitutes for the 1-0 defeat at Swansea City.

He has been back in the side for the last two matches, but his header for Chile in their defeat to Argentina is his only goal of 2022 so far, his winner against Barnsley on December 29 his last for Rovers.

On the injury, Mowbray added: “I thought it was a kick but he has turned his ankle.

“We’ll have to see, everyone’s body is different, they recover differently.

“I don’t want to put a timescale on it but suffice to say he won’t be available this weekend and fingers crossed he recovers quickly and is back soon.”
