Rovers won’t abandon their prudent approach to spending despite being in promotion contention with 20 games remaining.

Victory at Hull City would see Rovers move back into the automatic promotion places and extend their unbeaten run to 11 games.

Tony Mowbray has previously stressed Rovers wouldn’t be splashing the cash in January or break their wage structure for key players whose contracts are nearing expiry.

They announced their third January signing yesterday, exciting attacking prospect Dilan Markanday joining on a permanent basis from Tottenham.

His six-figure arrival was only the third of its kind within 12 months, and Mowbray says they won’t change their financial approach.

“We are coming out of a really difficult time in the history of the world, not just football, and it’s not as if ‘come on let’s throw millions and millions at this because we have a chance’, it’s right to be prudent and try and keep building the club in the right way,” he said.

“I hear so many stories about clubs, and when we enquire about players from other clubs and I hear about their salary levels it’s mind-blowing to think our best earning player, these club that you don’t see as bigger and better than your club, they’re on twice as much basic salary and you think ‘how on earth can they do that?’

“As we find sometimes they can’t do it and the financial restraints and the points losses come because they’re gambling to try and get to where they want.

“I think it’s prudent to do it how we’re trying to do it, stick within our structure, let’s not break the structure because we’ve had a good two months, let’s keep trying to build a football club.”

Mowbray travelled to India in 2017, 2018 and 2019 but due to the pandemic hasn’t met the owners face-to-face since. He says conversations are held daily with Suhail Pasha, the owners’ representative at the club, who is in contact with the Rao family.

Rovers have so far agreed one free transfer deal, a loan to buy agreement with Hertha Berlin for right back Zeefuik with Markanday the first permanent arrival since Tayo Edun in the summer.

Asked of his recent contact with the owners, Mowbray said: “Suhail talks to the owners every single day and I talk to Suhail every single day so there’s a very direct line through a conduit.

“Suhail had a big part in me joining this club, my relationship with him is very strong.

“I hope there’s a strong trust there between us.

“Indirectly, as opposed to speaking to them directly, I speak to them on a daily basis.”
