Rovers player ratings from the FA Cup defeat at Wigan Athletic

Aynsley Pears 4

An afternoon to forget for the stand-in stopper. Allowed a Power shot to burst through him and then a Whatmough header to slip through his fingers. Lost all confidence after the opener and his positioning came under question for the eventual winner.

Tyrhys Dolan 5

Utilised in an unfamiliar right wing back role and therefore couldn’t have the impact on the game he would have hoped. Booked for a cynical foul and struggled to add much in the attacking third.

Darragh Lenihan 7

Looked really powerful and strong in the challenge, possibly to his detriment when suffering a blow to the knee that saw him replaced at the break.

Jan Paul van Hecke 6

DIdn’t look as comfortable on the left side of the three in the first half, earning a booking. Seemed to be playing through the pain barrier in the closing stages.

Daniel Ayala 7

Looked to have sent the tie to extra time with his third goal of the season and was faultless in the air for the most part.

Tayo Edun 6

His final ball was found lacking at times when joining in the attack in the first half in particular. Coped well defensively for the most part, the start of what looks set to be a run in the side.

Lewis Travis 6

Always up for the fight and didn’t back down from any battle, but didn’t move the ball with as much purpose as his midfield partner.

Joe Rothwell 7

The best moments of quality stemmed from the boot of the midfielder who impressed with the ball at his feet. Set up the opening goal and it was his defence-splitting pass that led to the disallowed goal.

John Buckley 6

Enjoyed a strong start to the game and one excellent bit of play should have given Rovers the lead, picking the wrong option when through on goal. Replaced on the hour after picking up another booking.

Sam Gallagher 5

Handed a first start since October 30 but saw his afternoon cut short when pulling up with a hamstring injury.

Ben Brereton 6

A tight offside call denied him his 21st goal of the season, while a smart Jones stop denied him just before the break. Had one shot just over in the first half and one narrowly wide in the second, but didn’t get overly involved in general break.

Subs

Reda Khadra (for Gallagher, 31) 7

Scored a fine goal when breaking forward before shooting into the bottom corner. Was a threat with the ball at his feet, but frustrated his manager at times with his work on the ball.

Bradley Johnson (for Lenihan, 46) 5

Brought on to try and add some balance on the left side of the defence but his use of the ball was sloppy too often.

Dan Butterworth (for Buckley, 69) 6

Always looks like someone who can grab a goal and managed two shots from the edge of the box after his introduction.
