Rovers have allowed Sam Burns to join League Two side Scunthorpe United on loan.

The striker has been in fine form for the Under-23s this season and also spent time with FC United of Manchester earlier in the campaign.

Burns has seven goals in nine starts at Premier League 2 level, while also netting a further five in the cup competitions after nailing down the No.9 shirt in Mike Sheron’s side.

The 19-year-old signed a one-year contract, with a 12-month option, in the summer and will be eager to impress during his first taste of EFL football.

The striker has been a regular source of goals at youth level but is still waiting to make his senior debut for Rovers, though did feature in pre-season.

Scunthorpe are currently second bottom of League Two, with 19 points from 23 games.

They were beaten 1-0 by Carlisle United last time out, but did picked up a morale-boosting victory at bottom club Oldham Athletic on Boxing Day.

Burns could make his debut when the Iron, managed by Keith Hill, travel to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

Speaking of the move, Burns told Scunthorpe's official website: "The move came about quite quickly, over the duration of a week really, but it's great to be here and get going.

"It's been good training with the players already. It's been top drawer and different to what I'm used to at Under-23s level, but I'm buzzing to get in and work hard, give what the manager wants and help the team.

"He's told me to work hard and work my way into the side, and to show my quality. I have pace and I'm quick at running in behind, and can hopefully bring some goals to the team.

"I'm looking forward to playing first team football and getting some goals while I'm here. I can play anywhere across the front but I see myself as a striker."

Scunthorpe tried to sign fellow Rovers youngster Connor McBride on loan on deadline day, only for that move to fail to materialise.

The Scot is expected to join League One side Crewe Alexandra on loan for the remainder of the season after being left out of the Premier League Cup win at Middlesbrough over the weekend.
