Tommy Doyle could be back on Rovers’ radar in January with Manchester City weighing up the value of recalling him from his loan spell with Hamburg to strike a fresh agreement with a Championship club.

Rovers will look to add to their attacking midfield ranks next month and the prospect of a loan move for Doyle would likely be of interest.

A host of Championship clubs looked to take the 20-year-old on loan in the summer, only for Bundelisga II side Hamburg to win the race for his signature.

However, that hasn’t worked out as planned, only making six league appearances as a substitute, with Doyle having returned to England as the German second tier enters its winter break.

Doyle has starred for City’s Under-23 and already made seven first-team appearances for his boyhood club. And Rovers would look to revisit their interest in him should become available for loan when the window re-opens next month.

Mowbray expected to fill all of Rovers’ five loan spots during the summer window, only for a move for Bordeaux striker Josh Maja to fall through on deadline day after he failed a medical, leaving one free.

Brighton duo Jan Paul van Hecke and Reda Khadra have played key role in the recent resurgence, but Seagulls boss Graham Potter has raised the prospect of recalling the pair in January to stockpile players due to the ongoing concern of rising Covid cases.

Liverpool loanee Leighton Clarkson, aged 20, has struggled for an impact since his season-long move was agreed, making only four starts and three substitute appearances and none in the last month.

Ian Poveda’s loan from Leeds United is under review, with the prospect of the 21-year-old not playing again this season having undergone surgery on his ankle following his injury at Bristol City last month.

Rovers will look to boost their options in January as a result, with more cover in midfield expected to be targeted.

While Rovers have competition in the form of Bradley Johnson, Jacob Davenport and Clarkson, all three are more defensive options.

While Bradley Dack will come back into the reckoning next month, cover for the positions currently occupied by Joe Rothwell and John Buckley would be a boost to Mowbray’s options in the middle of the park.
