Rovers fans are advised to hold off booking accommodation and travel for next month’s trip to Cardiff City.

It comes as the Welsh Government has announced that sporting events will return to behind closed doors from Boxing Day.

No date has been given for their return, but it is suggested it will be until at least January 7.

Rovers are set to travel to the Cardiff City Stadium on January 15. Their last two visits in April 2021 and July 2020 were also both played behind closed doors.

It comes as the number of Omicron cases rises, with the change in rules also affecting Swansea City, who Rovers travel to on February 5, and League Two side Newport County.

The EFL announced on Monday that it would continue with the games programme despite the number of postponements due to rising Covid cases.

It stressed that teams would be expected to fulfil their fixtures if 14 players, including a goalkeeper, were available.

Fans of the three EFL clubs in Wales would still be able to travel to matches in England, as things stand.

An EFL spokesperson said: "The EFL notes the disappointing news that fans of Welsh clubs competing in the EFL will be unable to watch their team play live at home over the festive period, but we appreciate there are many factors influencing each administration's decision.

"Looking forward, the League will continue to work with our broadcast partners and other relevant stakeholders throughout this difficult period as we consider how we can appropriately support our Welsh clubs and their supporters so they can watch their team while matches are played behind closed doors.

“In addition, we will engage with the authorities in Wales to determine what type and or level of financial support they can provide our clubs in Wales whilst they are unable to welcome supporters through the turnstiles.”

Rovers’ Boxing Day fixture with Hull City has been selected for live Sky Sports coverage.

The kick-off time of 3pm remains unchanged and replaces the previously scheduled Sky game of Barnsley v Stoke which was postponed due to Covid cases in the Potters camp.

The Boxing Day meetings pits together a Rovers side who have won each of their last five fixtures while the Tigers have pulled clear of the relegation places after a run of four wins and two draws before their weekend defeat to Nottingham Forest.

It has been a happy hunting ground for Rovers, with 1-0 visits on their visits to Hull in 2018 and 2019 thanks to winners from Bradley Dack and Derrick Williams respectively.

Rovers will next be on Sky Sports when they host Middlesbrough on Monday, January 27 (7.45pm).

Tickets are now on sale for Rovers’ FA Cup third round tie at Wigan Athletic.

The game has been confirmed for Saturday, January 8 (3pm) at the DW Stadium with tickets priced at £15 for adults and £8 for concessions.

The initial allocation is for 2,000, with those currently on sale to season ticket holders before going on general sale from Friday.
