Rovers have recalled Aidan Dowling from his loan spell to bolster the club’s goalkeeping options.

The 19-year-old signed his first professional contract in the summer and made his debut for the Under-23s in their 1-0 win at Chelsea earlier this season.

To gain further experience, Dowling was loaned to Lancaster City in October that was then extended through to January, only for him to now be recalled.

Dowling made nine appearances during his time with Lancaster in the Northern Premier Division, helping the team to six wins.

He has been around the Under-23s squad during the period of his loan, on the bench for Monday’s Premier League Cup win over Nottingham Forest where Felix Goddard was handed the gloves, making his debut for Mike Sheron’s side.

Despite Thomas Kaminski returning from injury and Aynsley Pears having done an excellent job deputising for the Belgian during his absence with a stomach muscle problem, Rovers have moved to strengthen their back-up options by recalling Dowling early from his loan.

Jordan Eastham has been the back-up to Pears, with Antonis Stergiakis currently sidelined with a foot injury.

Meanwhile, Rovers Under-23s Premier League fixture at Leicester City tonight has been postponed due to a number of positive Covid cases in the Foxes camp.
