Ryan Nyambe is set for a scan on his hamstring to determine the extent of the damage suffered when coming off in the win at Bournemouth.

Tony Mowbray allayed fears over Scott Wharton, revealing it was illness rather than injury which saw the defender replaced moments after Jan Paul van Hecke made it 2-0.

However, there was further disruption in the defence as Nyambe limped out with a hamstring issue, while Bradley Johnson and Jan Paul van Hecke hobbled through the closing stages to ensure 11 players finished the game after all three changes had been made.

Rovers held out for a fourth consecutive win, and clean sheet, with Mowbray praising the workrate of his side which he said contributed to the injuries.

“The medical team were stressing to me that he should have come off at half time,” Mowbray said of Wharton.

“Right from the start of the game he was feeling unwell, an upset stomach. He soldiered on through it and then felt that he couldn’t go on, he was washed out.

“That’s not a concern, he’ll have a week to get back up to speed.

“Ryan Nyambe, his hamstring really. I was driving him hard in the second half up and down that wing and he’s feeling his hamstring. He’ll go for a scan.

“Bradley Johnson took a knock and Jan Paul was wanting to come off at the end but we’d already made our three subs.

“We’re carrying a few niggles but they all feel better in the dressing room after taking the win.”

The positive for Rovers was that Wharton’s need to come off coincided with the return of Daniel Ayala.

The Spaniard had missed the previous two matches with a rolled ankle but was thrust into the action for the final half an hour to replace Wharton in the back three.

Sam Gallagher was already on the pitch at that stage, Mowbray turning to the attacker as his first change of the afternoon, the attacker back in the fold after being absent for five matches with a calf problem.

And Mowbray feels their returns with only strengthen the side.

“Huge. They’re experienced players for us, Daniel is very experienced and has promotions out of this division,” he added.

“He had to bide his time. He should be in our team every week with his experience and quality, his heading of the ball and the way he defends his box is amazing but the team have done well the last three games and he had to sit on the bench and wait his time and when it came he did really well.”
