Chairman Janet Mitchell praised her ‘history makers’ as Chorley Women continued their journey into unchartered waters in the Vitality FA Cup.

Having reached the second round for the first time in the club’s history, a superb 5-0 victory against Bradford City Women has set up a third round clash with Newcastle United Women on Sunday.

Due to the adverse weather conditions, the tie was moved from Chorley’s usual Coppull United base to the 4G pitch at Leigh Sports Village.

But that switch untroubled Chorley as two goals from Ellie Cleary and Aleesha Collins and one for Betti Worth sealed a straightforward victory against fellow FAWNL side Bradford City Women.

They now face another divisional rival in unbeaten Newcastle United - the pair having already battled out a 1-1 draw in the league earlier in the season.

Mitchell said she was proud of the efforts of the team and manager Ben Gooden and his coaching staff.

“This result and the fact the squad has made history is testament to the shear hard work both the players and management have put in this season,” she said.

“We are very proud of everyone. Special mention to the supporters who travelled to Leigh, it really makes a difference to the players, we hope to see everyone again next week.”

Chorley broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when captain Laura Walker whipped in a corner and Worth rose highest to head home.

Gooden’s side began to dominate with Abbie Mackay, in particular, showing her dominance in the centre of the park. And a second goal arrived just before the break when Cleary fired home from close range.

Bradford came out fighting after half time but Chorley soon knocked the stuffing out of their visitors with a third goal when Collins showed great pace as she raced through the defence before slotting the ball in the corner.

The game became a bit scrappy, Chorley playing the better football with Rachel Hindle looking dangerous on the right and Megan Searson coming close with a long-range effort.

With Chorley looking comfortable and the game slipping away from Bradford, Gooden made three changes; Isabel Catlow, Walker and Hindle departing with Charlotte Evans, Nat Bell and Katie Matthews entering the fray.

Bradford went close to pulling a goal back on the hour but Mackay was in the right place to clear off the the line. So after, Cleary got her second and Chorley’s fourth when she swivelled in the area to score before Collins blasted home her second to complete the scoring.

Mitchell is now looking forward to taking on Newcastle United at Coppull United on Sunday (1pm ko).

“Newcastle will be a much harder game, they are currently second in the league and unbeaten this season,” she said. “But we came close to beating them at their place earlier in the season. We will need to be on our top game but it’s not impossible.

“It should be a cracking game.”
