Rovers and Burnley have learned their FA Cup third round opponents.

The Clarets will host Championship side Huddersfield Town while Rovers face an away trip to League One high-fliers Wigan Athletic.

Ties will be played on the weekend of January 8.

For Burnley it will be a first meeting with the Terriers since January 2019, while Rovers last faced Wigan in June 2020. The pair were also promoted from League One along with each other in 2017/18.

Huddersfield enter the competition along with Burnley at round three, while League One Wigan have had to beat Solihull Moors and Colchester to get this far.

Rovers, six times winners of the competition, have a poor recent record in the FA Cup, yet to reach round four under Tony Mowbray following third round defeats to Hull City, Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Doncaster Rovers.

Burnley reached round five last season, only to suffer defeat at home to Bournemouth.

The Clarets face a trip to Leeds United to kick off 2022 on January 2, with the FA Cup tie coming ahead of the home visit of Leicester City on January 15.

Rovers saw their game with Huddersfield Town moved to January 2, while they face a trip to Cardiff City on January 15.

The fourth round will take place on the weekend of February 5 which would clash with Rovers’ trip to Swansea City, while Burnley are without a game.
