Tony Mowbray was considering a change when Reda Khadra came up with another matchwinning contribution.

The Brighton loanee was preferred to Tyhrys Dolan for a second week running and after his winning goal at Stoke, also in the 53rd minute, he came up with an excellent cross for Ben Brereton to head in what proved to be the only goal.

There was plenty of clamour from supporters for a Dolan recall, particularly given it was against his former club and it only being down to not being 100 per cent that he lost his place after claiming an assist in the win over Peterborough.

Yet Mowbray stuck with Khadra as the attacker added an assist to goals in wins against Stoke and Sheffield United.

Dolan eventually replaced Khadra but not before the 20-year-old had come up with a real moment of quality in a game that had lacked it to that point.

“I was looking at the game and thinking about making a change and giving them time,” Mowbray said.

“Reda didn’t get many touches of the ball but you just have to watch him in the training sessions and he’s the fastest thing I’ve seen.

“The power and speed he has when he wants to stretch for that ball is quite scary.

“The conditions, we wanted it to put it over the top and needed to keep him on.

“He’s got a rocket in his right foot and he flashed that cross in and Brereton directed it into the net.

“It was a great goal.”

Brereton made it seven goals in as many games when directing Khadra’s cross beyond Daniel Iversen, one of only two attempts on target that Rovers managed in a match where conditions were difficult.

“The goal was a flash of brilliance among the mediocrity regarding what both teams were forced to deal with, in terms of both sides not taking chances and focussing on playing forward,” Mowbray added.

“Reda produced a fantastic cross which saw Ben finish with a fantastic header.”
