Scans have shown Daniel Ayala hasn't sustained any extensive damage to his ankle but Tony Mowbray says the Spaniard is a doubt for the weekend visit to Stoke City.

Ayala limped out of the 4-0 win over Peterborough United having only just returned from a calf problem. However, the manager reported it was a rolled ankle that had seen the 31-year-old replaced in the first half.

The central defender has since undergone a scan which hasn’t revealed any long-term damage, with the plan for him to train today.

“The scan was positive, no outstanding damage, just a slightly rolled ankle,” Mowbray said.

“He will be assessed today. He will put his boots on and see how he feels.

“I would not anticipate him being involved this weekend but will not rule him out.

“The positive is that it’s not a long-term injury.”

Mowbray has reported no fresh injuries but says there are several bumps and bruises in the wake of the Peterborough win.

Jan Paul van Hecke is available after serving his three-match suspension following his red card against Fulham.

The Brighton loanee could be primed to replace Ayala should he not make it and Mowbray want to stick with the three-man defence he started with against Posh.

Hayden Carter is in contention to come back into the squad after missing out against Peterborough through illness.
