Ben Brereton has been shortlisted for the Championship player of the month prize for September after scoring six times and adding an assist in his five outings.

The Chile international hit a hat-trick in the win over Cardiff City, a brace in the defeat at Huddersfield Town and was also on target in the win over Hull City.

That form has seen the 22-year-old nominated for the player of the month prize for the first time.

The panel said of Brereton: “A summer away with Chile appears to have given him the missing piece to his game. Six goals, including a hat-trick against Cardiff, and an assist were claimed with a willingness to beat defenders and add a flourish to his finishing.”

Brereton isn’t the only player enjoying a goalscoring start to the season to be nominated for the prize, the winner of which will be announced tomorrow morning.

Viktor Gyokeres netted five of Coventry City’s seven goals in September, earning him a nomination, while Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is also in the running after matching Brereton’s tally of six goals last month.

Completing the four-man shortlist is John Swift. The Reading midfielder scored four times, including a hat-trick, and also chalked up three assists.

Neil Critchley (Blackpool), Scott Parker (Bournemouth), Slavisa Jokanovic (Sheffield United) and Wayne Rooney (Derby County) are in the running for the manager prize.
