Tony Mowbray is hopeful top scorer Ben Brereton will only miss one game on his return from international duty with Chile.

Rovers and the Chilean FA have reached a compromise which will see Brereton feature in two of their three World Cup qualifiers before returning to undergo his period of quarantine.

Players returning from red list countries are set to see their quarantine requirement cut from 10 days to five, with Rovers hopeful Brereton will therefore be available for the trip to QPR on October 19 and only miss the visit of Coventry City on October 16.

Brereton was not involved in the September qualifiers, despite being named in Martin Lasarte’s squad, due to concerns over quarantine rules upon his return from south America, with a compromise reached in order for Chile to drop their complaint to FIFA over his non-release.

“I think those discussions are still going on,” Mowbray said of proposed quarantine changes.

“We had an agreement with the Chilean Football Association and I have spoken to the club secretary about it.

“At this moment, he’s pretty confident that what has been discussed with Chile will be the case, Ben will play the first two games and then return for his quarantine which will shorten the time away. It’ll probably be tight for the QPR match on Tuesday, we’ll have to wait and see.

“From my perspective, we will deal with whatever comes our way. If he is available then he’s available, and if he’s not he won’t be.

“He’ll come back fit and keep scoring goals on the journey that he’s on.”

Chile face an uphill task in their bid to reach Qatar 2022, with just seven points from nine games, having taken just one point from their three matches last month.

Brereton will feature in matches against Peru (October 8) and Paraguay (October 11) but miss the home game with Venezuela (October 15) to return to the UK.

The forward has been in fine form for Rovers this season, with nine goals in his opening 10 Championship games, as contract talks between the club and the attacker continue.

Although they appear to have reached an impasse, Rovers do have a one-year option in the deal agreed with Brereton when joining from Nottingham Forest in 2018, which offers some level of security.

Meanwhile, Rovers have also confirmed that Ryan Nyambe won’t meet up with Namibia for their World Cup qualifiers with Senegal.

The 23-year-old was forced off in the defeat to Huddersfield Town with concussion, and after following protocols, and upon medical advice, Nyambe has been ruled out of action.

Nyambe was set to meet up with the Brave Warriors ahead of the first game with Senegal on October 9, and then return to Rovers, missing the return leg three days later, after a compromise was reached owing to quarantine rules.

But he will now stay at the club during the break and make his return to action against Coventry City on October 16.
