Harvey Elliott will undergo surgery today on a dislocated ankle, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed.

The former Rovers loan star sustained the injury in the second half of Sunday’s 3-0 win at Leeds United, but absolved Pascal Struijk of any blame with his club having now appealed against the red card he was shown.

Rovers manager Tony Mowbray and many of the club’s players have sent messages of support to the teenager who was discharged from hospital on Sunday before heading to London to undergo surgery.

Posting on social media, Elliott said: “Thank you everyone at Rovers for the support. A big place in my heart forever. I’ll be back.”

Elliott starred during his season-long stay at Ewood Park, with seven goals and 11 assists, before returning to Anfield where he signed a long-term contract extension.

He started the opening three Premier League games of the season after featuring extensively in pre-season, but is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

"We're all disappointed for Harvey, of course," said Mowbray, who also felt Struijk was unfortunate to be sent off.

"He's started the season really well at Liverpool starting in their first team and making a big impact.

"It's just really frustrating and disappointing. You're hoping that he goes on and fulfils his potential and enjoys a great season, cementing himself as a regular at Liverpool football club, international football and beyond.

"It looked a bad injury. It's for Liverpool, Harvey and his family to see how long his rehabilitation is and hopefully he comes back strong and continues."

Klopp said Liverpool will await news from the surgeon as to how long Elliott will be out for, but said Elliott ‘had accepted he would be out for a while’.

A Liverpool club statement added: “Harvey, his family and Liverpool FC would like to place on record their thanks to the paramedics and all the staff at Leeds General Infirmary for the care and treatment given.”
