Leeds United are open to offers, both loan and permanent, for defender Niall Huggins.

Huggins has been one of the defensive options Rovers have looked at in this window, but a move away from Elland Road for the 20-year-old is not imminent.

Rovers are keen to strengthen their defensive options, with Tony Mowbray having revealed the prospect of two new additions in that area of the pitch before the August 31 deadline.

With Scott Wharton injured, and concerns over the long-term fitness of Daniel Ayala, Rovers are in the market for a central defender, but are also short in the full back areas.

Joe Rankin-Costello has covered both full back positions during his time with the senior side, but is currently sidelined by injury. Although due back next month, Rovers will consider using Rankin-Costello in a more advanced position which could see both him and Ryan Nyambe in the same team, rather than competing for the same birth.

Wales Under-21 international Huggins is able to play in both full back positions but is by trade a left back, has two years left to run on his deal with the Premier League club but Leeds are thought to be weighing up offers from Championship clubs.

The 20-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance for Leeds, that coming in the 4-2 defeat at Arsenal in February but he did make the bench on nine more occasions.

However, Marcelo Bielsa has since moved for a senior option at left back this summer, recruiting Junior Firpo from Barcelona who played in the 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Rovers last month.

Rovers and Leeds did business for a left back last summer, bringing in Barry Douglas on a season-long loan deal before his release from Elland Road in the summer, returning to Polish side Lech Poznan last month.

Harry Pickering was signed as a long-term left back option in January, then loaned back to Crewe Alexandra for the remainder of the season, and has started the opening three matches of this season.

That follows the release of Amari’i Bell, the Jamaica international going on to sign for Championship side Luton Town.

Academy prospect Lenni Cirino featured against Leeds and was on the bench for the Carabao Cup defeat to Morecambe.
