Swansea City saw their pre-season preparations suffer yet another blow on Saturday after their friendly at Bristol Rovers was postponed due to a Covid outbreak within their first-team bubble.

It is the second of their pre-season matches to be cancelled, with Swindon Town having called off the friendly the previous weekend.

It is understood there were three positive cases within the first-team squad which forced the cancellation of the game, and also putting into doubt their game at Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday.

Their final friendly comes next Saturday against Southampton, which will be one week out from their Championship opener at Ewood Park.

This is all while the Swans close in on the search for a new manager following the departure of Steve Cooper.

Cooper and the Swans agreed a mutual termination of his contract earlier this week, the former England Under-17s opting against extending his stay at the Liberty Stadium after back-to-back play-off finishes, beaten by Brentford in May’s final.

John Eustace had been the man expected to take over following talks, but he has now turned down the offer of the job and will instead continue in his role as assistant manager of QPR.

For Swansea, it leaves them heading back to the drawing board two weeks out from the August 7 opener against Rovers.

A statement from Swansea, read: "After positive cases were identified, the club decided it was in the best interests of both players and staff – as well as everyone connected with Bristol Rovers – to cancel Saturday’s game in order to minimise the potential spread of the virus.

"In keeping with Welsh Government guidelines, those individuals who tested positive will now undergo a period of isolation.

"All staff and players within the first team bubble will undergo ongoing monitoring and testing."
