Corry Evans is undergoing a medical at Sunderland following his release by Rovers ahead of a possible move.

Evans saw his eight-year association with Rovers end this summer, leaving the club having made 219 appearances following his arrival from Hull City.

The 30-year-old looks set to sign a two-year deal with the League One side, according to reports.

Having previously interested Stoke City, there was an expectation of a link-up with former national team boss Michael O'Neill, but that was later played down, leaving Evans continuing to search for a new club.

Evans, capped 66 times by his country, was one of six players let go by Rovers at the end of their contracts, and the latest to get fixed up with a club.

Charlie Mulgrew has signed for Scottish Premiership side Dundee United, Amari’i Bell was snapped up by Championship side Luton Town, while Elliott Bennett joined League One outfit Shrewsbury Town.

Stewart Downing looks set for retirement after his time at Rovers came to an end, while Lewis Holtby remains without a club, but has stated his desire to return to his native Germany.

Sunderland, managed by former Bristol City boss Lee Johnson, are preparing for a fourth consecutive season in League One.

They were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Lincoln City last season after a fourth-placed finish, having also lost out in the play-offs in 2018/19.

Evans looks set to become their second summer signing following the arrival of Alex Pritchard.
