Matt Derbyshire’s jet-setting career has taken him back to Cyprus after a year in Australia.

Derbyshire has signed for AEK Larnaca on a two-year deal, joining on a free transfer after just 12 months with Macarthur FC.

He netted 14 times in 25 matches for the A-League side, but will be playing his football in Cyprus again from next season, joining Larnaca having previously spent four years with Omonia Nicosia.

There he scored 59 times for Henning Berg’s side before switching to the A-League.

Derbyshire arrived at hometown club Rovers in 2003 from Great Harwood Town and in his six years at the club he scored 20 times.

He had a spell in Greece with Olympiakos and time in the Championship with Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United he made the switch to Cyprus in 2016, signing for Omonia.

The 35-year-old striker netted 14 goals in the 2019/20 before it was curtailed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Omonia were sitting top of the table at the time, and they ended their 11-year wait for a top-flight title by claiming top spot last season.

Derbyshire’s new employers, Larnaca, finished in fifth.
