Tony Mowbray says only Harry Chapman will determine what part he has to play in Rovers’ future plans.

Chapman penned a one-year deal with Rovers, but that hasn’t stopped interest from League One and Scottish sides in the winger who impressed on loan at Shrewsbury last season.

The 23-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Rovers since signing permanently in January 2019, playing just 186 minutes of Championship football in that time, and struggled to maintain a spot in the matchday squad.

That saw him regularly feature for the Under-23s prior to a January switch to Shrewsbury which Chapman credits for bringing back his belief and confidence as well as maturing, scoring seven times in 23 appearances.

Chapman started the friendly at AFC Fylde, but has to work to do to convince Mowbray that he will be a long-term option.

He said: “Chapman has to learn to be a hardworking, honest, threat for our team.

“He has to mature into the footballer we want him to be and only he will decide if he’s going to be part of our plans moving forward or not.”

Chapman will be given the chance to impress in pre-season, with Rovers low on numbers following the departures of 11 players from the 2020/21 campaign.

The winger was the oldest attacker that feature at Fylde as Adam Armstrong, Sam Gallagher and Ben Brereton all didn’t feature, as a number of senior players sat out the game at Mill Farm.

They included goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski who was back with the squad in Scotland after a short spell with the Belgium national team at Euro 2020.

The 28-year-old didn’t feature at Fylde, and explaining that decision, Mowbray said: “Not enough work on the training ground.

“I let the senior players decide where they are (with their fitness).

“Working with Belgium is a lot different from working with us and he wasn’t ready to play yet.”
