Connor McBride believes opportunities will arise for members of the Under-23s squad after enjoying a positive start to pre-season.

McBride netted the winner at AFC Fylde 17 minutes from time, having spent the build-up to the game training with the first-team squad in his native Scotland.

The 20-year-old hit 12 goals in his debut season for the Under-23s, form which earned him a spot in the first-team matchday squad on one occasion last season, and he took his chance when it came for the first-team on Saturday at Mill Farm.

His smart finish helped Tony Mowbray’s side to a winning start to pre-season and he believes the friendly fixtures, and training with the first-team, will give him chance to catch Mowbray’s eye.

He featured at Fylde, along with Sam Burns, Sam Durrant and Luke Brennan, with Adam Armstrong, Sam Gallagher, Ben Brereton and Tyrhys Dolan all not involved.

McBride spent time on loan at Stenhousemuir from Celtic prior to his move to Ewood Park, signing a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Rovers would consider a spell away on loan next season should the opportunity arise for the attacker, with Doncaster linked with a possible move over the weekend.

For McBride, who is able to play across the forward line, his focus for now is on taking the first-team opportunity that could come his way.

He said: “We’re looking ahead to the new season with the Under-23s, but hopefully there will be one or two of us getting into the first team this coming season.

“That’s the aim, I think I speak for most of the boys when saying that.

“Hopefully we can impress in pre-season, get a few games in and catch the gaffer’s eye.”

McBride was part of the extended training squad that travelled to Scotland, and he added: “It’s been good to be back, I used to train at the facility we were at in Stirling when I was younger.

“Training was good, it’s been intense and it’s been great to get ready for the new season.

“It’s been tough, tougher than training with the Under-23s, the players are much more physical, but a brilliant experience.”
