Adam Reach remains on Rovers’ radar as Tony Mowbray looks to add some Championship-ready experience to his squad.

Reach was identified as a possible free agent signing earlier in the window after leaving Sheffield Wednesday but wage demands at that time made the prospect of any possible move unlikely.

However, it is understood that Reach remains a target amid the prospect of a deal being agreed with the 28-year-old.

Reach left Hillsborough at the end of his contract on a salary which far exceeded Rovers’ current wage limit, but free agents are likely to re-assess their demands following has been a slow start to the summer transfer window.

Rovers’ summer transfer business is likely to focus on that market, as well as loans, but they are still waiting to make their first deal of the summer.

They are currently unable to do any deals as part of an ongoing registration embargo which they hope will be cleared up when the club’s accounts are made public after being submitted to Companies House and expected to beat the June 30 deadline.

What remains uncertain however is whether that will be removed when the accounts are published amid the ongoing threat of breaking Championship spending rules.

The embargo was holding up a deal for Joe Hilton to join Hamilton Academical, but that has now been sanctioned, the ‘keeper joining the Scottish Championship side for the 2021/22 season.

While that would appear to be a positive step in the right direction, and a boost to Rovers’ recruitment hopes, the club had already held discussions with the EFL over sanctioning contract extensions and loan moves for their young players.

Any one player can’t have two deals pending at the same time, and with Hilton’s contract having not been ratified because of the embargo, any deal to Hamilton couldn’t go through, but both have now been rubber-stamped.

That is the first transfer deal out this summer, with Rovers still waiting to make their first foray into the market.

Reach could be one option to change that, available on a free transfer after leaving the Owls where he made 219 appearances, and impressed against Rovers last season, scoring a wonder goal in the 1-1 draw at Ewood Park and then setting up the winner for Josh Windass at Hillsborough in April.

Reach is also a player well known to Mowbray, indeed the Rovers manager handed him his senior debut in May 2011, aged 18, scoring a last minute goal in a win over Doncaster.

He made 40 appearances for Wednesday last season, scoring three times, as they were relegated to League One, and was one of a host of players released at the end of their deals, including Jordan Rhodes who subsequently joined Huddersfield Town.

Reach is able to play in a variety of roles, most recently used as a wing-back, but most notably as a wide player, but also in a central midfield role.

That is an area of the pitch Rovers are looking to strengthen after the departures of Stewart Downing, Lewis Holtby and Corry Evans, as well seeing midfield loanees Tom Trybull and Harvey Elliott return to their parent clubs.

The Rovers squad returned to pre-season training this week without any new signings, although Harry Pickering was a new face, having been loaned back to Crewe Alexandra following his January arrival.

It was a first pre-season since 2013 that Evans wasn’t involved, the Northern Ireland leaving the club at the end of his contract.

He had been strongly linked with a move to Stoke City, and secure a reunion with former national team boss Michael O’Neill, however that possibility has been ruled out for now.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Barry Douglas, let go by Leeds United this summer after his loan spell with Rovers ended, has been offered a contract by Brescia.
