Sam Hart and Jayson Leutwiler have been reunited at League Two side Oldham Athletic.

The Latics announced five signings last night, including the former Rovers duo who were team-mates at Ewood Park following their arrivals in 2017.

Both were let go by Rovers in 2020 and were searching for new clubs again this summer, Hart having opted against staying with Southend United following their relegation to the National League, while Leutwiler saw his short-term deal at Huddersfield Town expire.

They will now both be part of Keith Curle’s new-look side for 2021/22, with Hart’s one-year deal including an option, while Leutwiler has penned a two-year contract.

The ‘keeper played 18 times for Fleetwood in the first half of last season, but left following the departure of manager Joey Barton, later signing a short-term deal with Huddersfield where he failed to make an appearance.

The Canadian international played 13 times across his three years at Rovers, but will be targeting more regular football with the Latics.

Boss Curle said of the 32-year-old: “He’s certainly a presence in the goal and we needed to recruit well in that position as a priority. His CV shows that he’s played a lot higher but also knows League Two well and comes in with a fantastic attitude to make the number one shirt his.

“After meeting Jayson and speaking at length we knew it’d be a good match and we’re really excited to see what he can bring to the team on and off the pitch, because he’s another experienced professional in our ranks that will prove invaluable.”

Hart spent the first two months of last season without a club before returning to Southend where he had a loan spell away from Rovers, playing 21 times but failing to help them stave off relegation.

The 24-year-old also spent time at Rochdale and Shrewsbury leaving Rovers having made just seven appearances, the last of which came in December 2017.

“Sam is someone who still has huge potential but is now at a point in his career where he has matured from his experiences which will make him become an important part of the team we’re building here,” Curle said.

“He is eager to learn and be successful in the way we want to play. He’s the typical type of wing-back where he’ll have an impact on a regular basis in games.

“He’ll open teams up with his speed and physicality and I’ve been an admirer of his qualities when he’s been on the opposing side in the past.”

Oldham also added defenders Harrison McGahey and Jordan Clarke, plus forward Hallam Hope, to their ranks.
