Ben Brereton’s stock continues to rise after he claimed an assist for Chile in their 1-1 draw with Uruguay last night.

The draw ensures La Roja a spot in the knockout stages of the Copa America, with five points from their three matches, with one more group match to go against Paraguay on Friday.

Brereton teed up strike-partner Eduardo Vargas with a neat flick to hammer home a first half opener, only for Luis Suarez to turn home an equaliser in the second half.

The Rovers attacker made his second start, and third appearance, for Martin Lasarte’s side and was full of running before his departure midway through the first half.

There was concern for goalscorer Vargas who limped off with a hamstring problem moments before, with Chile already without talisman Alexis Sanchez and fellow forward Carlos Palacios, which could heap the pressure on Brereton to keep producing infront of goal.

It was a second 1-1 draw of the competition for Chile, who held group leaders Argentina in their opening match, and also followed draws by the same scoreline in World Cup qualifiers with Argentina and Bolivia.

The last eight ties will be played on July 2 and July 3, with Chile likely to come up against either Peru or Colombia as things stand.

His involvement in the Copa America will mean a late return to pre-season training for Brereton, with the Rovers players reporting back on Sunday.
