Adam Armstrong has been shortlisted for the PFA Championship player of the year as the recognition for his outstanding season continues.

Armstrong hit 28 league goals for Rovers in 2020/21, the most by any player at the club since Alan Shearer 25 years ago, while he was also the first player since Shearer to score three hat-tricks in a single season.

That came by netting back-to-back trebles at Ewood Park to finish the season, against Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City, and in doing so pass the 27 league goals scored by Jordan Rhodes in his debut season for the club in 2012/13.

Only Brentford’s Ivan Toney, whose play-off final penalty took him to 33 for the season, scored more goals than Armstrong in the Championship, though the Bees striker did find the net with 11 spot-kicks over the course of the campaign.

Armstrong’s form has alerted interest from Premier League clubs, his latest award nomination comes after being named in the PFA Championship team of the year, voted in by his fellow professionals.

He also won the club’s players’ player and Junior Rovers player of the year, but missed out on the top prize to goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

The 24-year-old is up to 64 goals in Rovers colours, having finished the season with seven goals in three matches.

Armstrong is one of six players to be shortlisted for the award, alongside Emi Buendia, Ivan Toney, Freddie Woodman, Kieffer Moore and Teemu Pukki.
