Adam Armstrong has been named in the PFA’s Championship team of the year after his outstanding season in front of goal.

The team, picked following votes from players in each respective division, has seen Armstrong selected after netting 28 goals for Rovers.

He finished second only to Brentford’s Ivan Toney, and ahead of Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki, both named alongside Armstrong in the side.

The 24-year-old won Rovers’ players’ player of the season, having scooped the player of the year prize 12 months earlier, in what has been a fine run of form for the 24-year-old since the start of 2020.

Armstrong finished the 2020/21 season with seven goals in three games, including back-to-back hat-tricks in successive 5-2 home wins over Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City.

He missed out on inclusion in the EFL’s team of the year, but his fellow professionals have named in the best XI across the season, the side including six players from champions Norwich City, but none from runners-up Watford.

Tim Krul, Max Aarons, Grant Hanley, Emi Buendia, Oli Skipp and Pukki are the six Canaries included, joined by Ethan Pinnock, Rico Henry and Toney from play-off winners Brentford.

The other two players in the side are Michael Olise, who was named the Championship’s young player of the year, and Armstrong.

In addition to the team of year awards for the Championship, League One and League Two, the PFA will soon be announcing the EFL Team of the Year.

Following that, the PFA Awards will take place on Sunday, June 6, with the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year also announced.
