Clues for Rovers’ selection on the final day could come when the Under-23s host Chelsea this afternoon (4pm).

Billy Barr’s side round off their Premier League 2 on the eve of the senior side doing the same against Birmingham City.

Tony Mowbray has hinted that he will mix up his team for the visit of Lee Bowyer’s Blues, with nothing riding on the final day.

Mowbray has previously resisted changes to his team, with Rovers themselves striving to reach 50 points, and also facing opposition battling for Championship survival.

That isn’t the case on the final day, which could see Mowbray hand opportunities in the squad to some of Barr’s Under-23s squad, and starting spots to the likes of Jacob Davenport, John Buckley and Tyrhys Dolan, with Tom Trybull ruled out and Joe Rothwell a doubt.

Rovers only named eight substitutes for last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Rotherham United following the late withdrawal of loanee Tom Trybull with a back issue.

With the Under-23s squad away at Chelsea the previous night, and not arriving back until 4am, Mowbray opted to go with a smaller bench, than add anyone to the squad.

He will call upon the services of Daniel Ayala, who played 60 minutes at Chelsea last week as part of his injury comeback, and there could be further opportunities for some of Barr’s squad on the bench should Mowbray opt to leave some of the out of contract players out of the matchday 20 against Birmingham.

He: “We’ll probably change the team around, give some young players a chance and see how they get on.

“If we win then that’s fine, it doesn’t really matter.”
