Jarrad Branthwaite looks to have played the final match of his Rovers loan spell.

The Everton loanee damaged his ankle in training, with Rovers awaiting results of a scan to determine the severity of the injury, but Tony Mowbray expects it will at least rule him out of the final three games.

Branthwaite was back in the side for win over Derby County, as Darragh Lenihan missed out with a groin issue which he then shook off to take his place alongside Taylor Harwood-Bellis at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 18-year-old dropped out of the squad altogether, with Mowbray revealing that was owing to an ankle issue, one of two injuries picked up in the back four.

Ryan Nyambe was also unavailable against the Owls with a foot injury, as Elliott Bennett returned at right back.

“Ryan and Jarrad are injured, hence their exclusion,” Mowbray told the club website of the pair.

“Jarrad has quite a bad one. He’s rolled his ankle pretty badly in training and I don’t think we’ll be seeing him again, this season. I anticipate its ligament damage, but I haven’t been given a full report on it.

“Ryan has a really sore, badly bruised toe and he struggled to put his boots on, let alone train and play a game.”

Branthwaite signed on loan in January and became a regular partner to Lenihan, before losing his place at the end of February to Harwood-Bellis.

Rovers made five changes in all against Wednesday, including three in central midfield, as Mowbray shuffled his pack.

That saw Lewis Holtby, who scored twice at Hillsborough last season, drop out of the squad all together.

“Lewis Holtby was the odd-one out,” Mowbray added.

“I want to get the young players, like John Buckley and Jacob Davenport involved more and had the game gone our way, Jacob would have probably got game time, but those young players remain important assets for the future of this club and hopefully they’ve got big futures.”
