Tony Mowbray says it’s not only Sheffield Wednesday desperate to win tonight’s game at Hillsborough.

The Owls know defeat, coupled with a win for Derby County, could see them relegated from League One, knowing only a win against Rovers will give them any chance of survival.

Rovers ended their wait for a win with just a second in 16 games against the Rams on Friday night to move to the safety mark of 50 points, but Mowbray says that won’t affect their mentality going into the game.

“We want to win every game, I don’t go into any game not wanting to win. Whatever team I pick there’s no ‘it doesn’t matter about this one so I’ll give him a game’,” Mowbray explained.

“I’m not really one to look at the table to the point where I know how many points Sheffield Wednesday are away from the team who are fourth bottom.

“I think they’re in a situation where they have to try and win every game, but we are trying to win every game.

“It will be two teams trying to win a game, that’s what it is, and it doesn’t mean that if we win then anxiety got on top of them, or if we lose then they wanted it more. It will be two football teams playing different systems, different ways, and who comes out on top on the night? Let’s see how the game rolls.”

Wednesday beat Cardiff City 5-0 earlier this month, but then slipped to a 4-1 defeat at QPR in their next match, and Mowbray admits finding a level of consistency is the biggest challenge to every team, and manager.

“Everyone has an opinion on the answers and generally it’s the manager who has got it wrong, that’s okay, that’s football, we all have a love of it,” he added.

“At this moment I’m picking the team, and with respect the fans or yourselves aren’t, and if I get it wrong and we get beat then every football manager in the world is open to criticism and that’s what life is.

“It’s great to do the job, to try and pick a team that can win.

“I’ve been in it a long time and I’ve got pretty thick skin, but I’m just making you aware that with the questions you have to be careful what you say because you leave yourself vulnerable.

“What I’m saying is that you’re trying to win every game, 46 games a season we’re trying to win every win, yet we don’t.

“Football is a hugely competitive game, footballers take a lot of criticism, they all work hard, they all want to win, they’re all competitive and that’s in their nature because they have become professional footballers, they’re competitive animals who are desperate to win every game.”
