Tony Mowbray says Bradley Johnson and Joe Rankin-Costello could travel with the squad for this weekend’s trip to Millwall – while Rovers will make a late call on the fitness of Adam Armstrong.

Johnson has missed Rovers’ last eight matches, of which six have been defeats, since sustaining a hamstring injury in the win at Middlesbrough in January.

The 33-year-old has trained for the last couple of weeks, and will again today, before Rovers decide whether he will be part of the squad at Millwall.

Rankin-Costello has missed more than three months of action with a more severe hamstring injury but has stepped up his recovery with two outings for the Under-23s.

The versatile 21-year-old has started nine Championship matches for Rovers this season and is expected to be part of the travelling party.

“Rankin-Costello might travel with us, Bradley Johnson, might travel, might be a bit early, we’ll wait and see how he does in training today,” Mowbray said.

Mowbray revealed after the defeat at Reading that he had considered replacing top scorer Armstrong at half time with the 24-year-old struggling with a sore hamstring.

The 20-goal striker played the full 90 minutes but Mowbray says Rovers will make a late call on his fitness ahead of the trip to Millwall.

“We will make a late call on Adam, we’ll wait and see,” Mowbray said.

A boost for Rovers is news that Sam Gallagher, who sustained bruising on the lung during the defeat at Nottingham Forest last month, trained with the squad for the first time since that injury yesterday.

“He trained yesterday, so we have to wait and see with this injury,” the manager explained.

“Sometimes they wake up the next morning and sometimes they’re really sore and aching, but others they’ll say they’re ready to go.

“We’ll wait and see how Sam is feeling when he comes in the building and whether he’ll get on the bus.

“He bruised his lung really badly at the time, there was the thought he might have punctured his lung but that wasn’t the case, it was just badly bruised.

“It’s a pain threshold I think, the medical department allowed him to train, we’ll wait and see how he is and if he’s fine he’ll come along with us, if not, he’ll stay here and when the doctor and the medical department tell me he’s ready to roll we’ll have him back in contention.”
